The purpose of the Self-Reliant Diver specialty course is to recognize and accept the role of the buddy system and its contributions to diver safety while identifying and developing self-reliance and independence while diving. There are two reasons for an experienced diver to take the Self-Reliant diver course:

♦ To develop the skills of planning and carrying out dives without a partner when preferred or necessary.
♦ To sharpen skills of diving self-reliance, making the diver a stronger partner in a dive pair or team.

♦ At least 18 years old.
♦ Certified as PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or equivalent.
♦ Have a minimum of 100 logged dives
♦ Able to either answer NO to all questions on the standard Medical History Form or secure a physician’s approval prior to the start of class.
♦ Highly recommended certified as PADI Rescue Diver or equivalent.

Class Size: 4 to 8 students

The Self Reliant Diver Course consists of academic session at MASS Diving, Inc. and three open water training dives.  This course covers when diving alone may be applicable, and the need to compensate for those situations, including dive planning, life support system readiness, adaptive training, equipment and responsibility. This course is an introduction to self-reliant diving that helps student divers develop the skills, knowledge and techniques necessary to rely on themselves first, whether or not they are diving with a partner, including:
♦ The value and application of the buddy system.
♦ The philosophy of, and motivation for, diving without a partner.
♦ Potential risks of diving alone, and how to manage those risks.
♦ The value of equipment redundancy and what back-up equipment is needed.
♦ Dive planning and gas management.

Equipment Needed: 
Students are responsible for supplying all of the equipment items listed below:
Scuba mask, snorkel, fins 
Adequate exposure protection 
Dive computer 
Underwater compass 
Audible surface signal 
Surface marker buoy, such as delayed surface market buoy (DSMB) or lift bag with at least 30 meters/100 feet of line 
Cutting tool 
Redundant gas source - pony cylinder, twin cylinders with isolation valve or sidemount configuration. Redundant gas must be configured so that the diver can access it with one hand
Redundant depth gauge and bottom timer, or dive computer
Redundant surface signaling devices (both visual and audible)
Back-up mask (recommended)+
Bathing suit and towel

MASS Diving Cancellation/Postponement Policy: MASS Diving reserves the right to cancel or postpone a class due to weather, lightning, pool closing, below minimum enrollment levels, or any other circumstance that may cause the course to be postponed. In the event of a class cancellation by MASS Diving, the student may switch to another date or receive a full refund on the instructional portion of the course. Materials fee is only refundable if returned in its original condition. Classes - Up to 14 Days Before Class Start Date:  Students may transfer into another class or cancel and receive a refund up to 14 days prior to their course start date with a 10% service fee. Student kit will only be credited if returned unused.  Opened DVDs cannot be returned. 5 to 13 Days Before Class Start Date: Students can transfer into a future class, no refunds and a re-scheduling fee of $50.00 will apply. 0 to 4 Days Before Class Start Date: students can transfer into a future class, no refunds and a re-scheduling fee of 50% of the tuition will apply. Rental Equipment is non-refundable, Gift Cards are non-refundable, Charter Boat is non-refundable unless the charter cancels.
